The following podcast was recorded with four high school English learners in the northeastern United States. We discuss the role of technology on navigating between students' first and second languages, as well as maintaining an L1 identity by connecting and interacting with friends and family in the students' home countries. We ask each student the following questions:

 

  1. What kind of technology do you use to maintain connections with your friends at home?

  2. What kind of virtual social groups do you belong to?

  3. What language(s) are your devices set to?

  4. How would you be affected if you were unable to use technology in your home language?

  5. Is your use of technology in your first language primarily in the listening/speaking domain or reading/writing?
